The Big Toe and Gout: A Small Joint With Outsized Consequences

Gout has Shaped History

Stub your toe, and the universe shrinks to that one little joint. Tears jump to your eyes, and you fold yourself over like a camp chair. You grab your foot with both hands and wait for the lightning to fade. Then you limp around the room, breathing in quick little gasps, muttering whatever words come to mind. After a while, the pain eases, the shock quiets down, and life rolls back into place.

But that is only the amateur version of toe misery. The stubbed toe is the slapstick sketch. The heavyweight champion of toe agony is something else entirely. It is gout, and when gout decides to visit that big toe, it feels like someone parked a hot anvil on your foot and leaned on it with both hands.
