Stop Missing the Follow‑Ups That Protect Your Health: A Planning Guide for Seniors and Families
A plain‑spoken guide to planning follow‑up care, transportation, and next steps so important tests and visits don’t slip through the cracks.
In medicine, showing up is half the treatment.
You can have excellent doctors, the right medications, and good hospitals — but if you miss the tests and follow‑up visits that tell us whether something is dangerous or harmless, the plan falls apart.
I learned that the hard way with a breast imaging patient many years ago.
She came in for a mammogram, and I recommended a biopsy of a small suspicious lesion. A year later, she returned for a routine mammogram, and I realized immediately that she may not have been told about that lesion, because a routine mammogram would be unusual as a follow‑up in that situation. This time, I walked her to the surgeon, myself. He was in the hospital, so I was sure she would get the care she needed without any further delay.
Today, we do much more to prevent that kind of gap.
